Ethical Production Statement
At Alx&Co. we believe in small scale, conscientious production that stays local and sets the standard for custom fine jewelry. Our priorities are to: practice fair labor standards that value our team; invest in practices that cut down on our production footprint; and serve clients in an accessible, welcoming, and educational perspective.
Labor Practices
We design and set everything in our on-site studio and workshop and utilize USA-based casters to fabricate our CAD designs. All pieces are set and finished by our own team of talented on-site jewelers in whom we have invested time and training. Our employees are paid fair, competitive, stable wages with access to health insurance, retirement plans, PTO, and continuous training and development.
Did you know that most bench jewelers are paid by the job and must meet production quotas, meaning that they are incentivized to work extremely fast and are punished if they do not meet certain numbers? To us, this leads to substandard production quality and burns out valuable talent. Bench craft takes time and patience to develop, and we pay our team stable salaries so that they can focus on their work quality instead of their quotas.
Sustainability Practices
We are active members of Ethical Metalsmiths, an educational non-profit that keeps industry leaders informed and participating in industry-improving practices.
We cast all pieces using a company that is an active member of the Responsible Jewelry Council and provides living wages to employees in Chicago area.
We provide clients with trade-in refinery services using a local SCS Certified refiner that employs a Zero Discharge wastewater treatment process in its facility and uses a method of gold refining that reduces acid use by 85%, among adhering other carbon-conscious protocols in its facility.
We work with USA-based, EPA-regulated, OSHA-compliant resources wherever possible, including our USA-based lab-diamond producer Clarity Diamonds.
We recycle as much as possible in our studio workshop using TerraCycle boxes, consciously disposing of our plastic gloves, sleeves, packages, and other non-usable waste.
We compost all organic matter from our studio including fresh flowers and paper towels using a FoodMill grinder that gets composted further down.
We use only reusable glass and other service materials for coffee and water and provide our team with filtered drinking water (no bottled water!)
Client Education & Services
We believe in providing a thoughtful, well-crafted, reliable product to our clients instead of encouraging impulsive buys and overly delicate materials that don’t last.
We take the time to educate clients on material options and price points and cover substantive differences thoroughly so that you can make a knowledgeable decision about your purchase.
We gladly and proudly work with any and all couples and family styles. This is a 100% welcoming studio, and we support policies that protect these rights.
Our Approach
As business owners, we realize the necessity of maintaining a profit-driven business: we are here to make money, not to save the world. But, we also know how much of an impact our little shop has on our immediate community by providing a safe, conscientious resource for our team members and clients alike.
